Brainwave Entrainment Frequencies

Normally, hearing involves sound waves pushing air pulses against the ear drum, moving the mechanical joints of the middle ear bones which amplify these vibrations to the inner ear, which pushes fluids into wave pulses, which move tiny nerve endings, which fire signals through the 8th cranial nerve directly into the Temporal lobe of the brain, which interprets these impulses as "sound.  By delivering these sound frequencies through the body directly, an entirely different system of the body - spinal cord and areas of the brainstem and brain - are brought into play, with the possibility of a much deeper whole-body response. With this delivery system we have the possibility of direct cellular stimulation. Direct stimulation of living cellular tissue using sound frequency vibration has shown marked cellular organelle response with a corresponding measurable increase of cellular metabolism and therefore a possible mobilization of a cellular healing response. Since the human body is over 70% water and since sound travels 5 times more efficiently through water than through air, sound frequency stimulation directly into the body is a highly efficient means for total body stimulation, especially at a cellular level.

Sound frequency pulse waves played directly into the body also has a profound effect on the nervous system. The entire posterior 1/3 of the spinal cord consists of nerve tract bundles whose sole purpose is the transmission of vibration sense data to the Brain Stem, Cerebellum, Pons, Medulla, Hippocampus/Limbic System (emotional processing areas) and various areas of the Cerebral Cortex.

Far-reaching possibilities are inherent in using this type of vibrational technology in the areas of stress reduction, relaxation and meditation. It is best to listen when with headphones on and lights out with eyes closed to get the full effects of the 3-D sound and brainwave pulse-wave information that requires the right/left sound images to be completely separated from one another. You will hear the sounds moving around you in three-dimensional space.

You can get a more powerful effect using Vibro-Tactile Therapy sound delivery systems, such as the Center for neuroacoustic research’s specially designed sound chairs (designed by NASA engineers for a zero gravity relaxation posture while listening to specially created Brainwave Entrainment soundtracks) – utilized at DreamWeaver House, the free community service center at the offices of Brain Retrain  It is an experience that leads to regeneration, increased focus, & hope renewed.

Using sound, it is possible to make profound changes in brainwave patterns and states of consciousness, observable on brainwave mapping equipment (EEG), as well as positive changes in the body, measurable with blood tests, bio-feedback equipment and other sophisticated procedures. We are also able to influence the core balance and functioning of the brain and central nervous system as a whole.

In a series of recordings based on these principles Dr Jeffrey Thompson has used sound frequency patterns built into the music that have been shown clinically to cause positive changes in consciousness, brainwave and body function.   This process involves the use of digital technology, electronic keyboards and computer programs which make it possible to take any recorded sound - instrument sounds, nature sounds, human voice sounds, etc. - and precisely alter the tuning of the right/left channels of these sounds (a precision of 100 steps of tuning between two notes on a piano) which causes an interference pattern of pulses to arise by the difference of tuning. If the speed of these pulses is calibrated to a brainwave speed (Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta), then the brainwaves will follow the speed of these pulses and brainwave entrainment will occur.

Dr. Thompson worked with two Neurofeedback practitioners, each for a two-year period. One of these was an intensive two year clinical collaboration with many types of conditions: Autism, ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, other forms of learning disabilities, Epilepsy, Bipolar Disorder, Clinical Depression, Anxiety Disorder, Chronic Insomnia, problems with concentration and memory and a host of others. He learned many things in these collaborations, but before any discussion of a sound healing approach to these conditions – and others – we must first have a foundational knowledge of what Neurofeedback is.

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback in which the brain is hooked up to a sophisticated EEG brain-mapping computer, usually with 24 lead wires.

The QEEG or Quantitative EEG shows a topographical color map of brain activity. With this system you can see which brainwave frequencies are present and where in the brain they are taking place. In this way you can determine which brain activity is abnormal and which planes of communication between hemispheres are not working properly. Different conditions show distinct patterns of abnormal activity in the brain. The Neurofeedback therapy approach is to set up a computer icon “game” which the patient attempts to “play” by only using their brainwave function. For instance, the EEG “game” might be attempting to fly a plane above the ocean without it crashing or going too far up into the clouds. The game has been preprogrammed to only fly correctly when you produce the correct brainwave patterns, otherwise it crashes.

This kind of intake exam and training is very expensive and require an average of 40-60 sessions. The first 10 sessions or so are very frustrating because the brainwaves that must be produced to play the game are the very ones the patient cannot produce. No one can tell them what to do to produce these brainwave patterns, so they must discover it themselves.

Dr. Thompson’s approach was to use brainwave entrainment to entrain the brainwaves from where they were “stuck” to the target normal brainwave pattern. He wanted to see if He could cut out the 10 sessions of frustration and also save some money in treatments for patients.

ADD and ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This diagnosis generally refers to children patients, but more and more adults are being diagnosed each year.

The QEEG usually shows these kids with brainwave activity “stuck” in Theta, or daydream mode, and an inability to speed the brainwaves up to a Beta brainwave function for a normal mental external focus state. In addition there is usually a non-communication between the hemispheres in various planes. 70% of Dr. Thompson’s first eight years of practice in Virginia were women and children. A large portion of the kids he had as patients were kids diagnosed as having ADD or ADHD. He used the standard cross-crawl testing procedures and cross-crawl exercise programs with great success, but with many frustrations.

Most of the kids (and adults) He has seen with this problem have had a history of a closed head injury, whiplash or birth trauma. Well over half had a birth trauma, either “C” Section or Forceps delivery. Here’s what Dr Jeffrey Thompson believe is the mechanism of action:

When a baby is born normally, the head is squeezed into a football shape as it is passing through the birth canal. Once the head clears it “pops” back to a round position and this initiates the Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Cranial Pump. The 24 bones of the skull fit together like a jigsaw puzzle with joints. These joints allow all the cranial bones to move with each respiration and this is part of the mechanism that pumps the CSF around the brain.

Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) is an electrolyte and has a dual function: to chemically help all the neurons fire more efficiently and as a pressurized fluid in the skull to cushion the brain from impact. The neurons must be bathed with fresh CSF electrolytic solution constantly, so new CSF is manufactured in four large chambers in the center of the brain called Ventricles and circulates through ducts to the outside of the brain and spinal cord between the meninges. Movement of the cranial bones of the skull torque on the meninges and help pump the CSF around the brain and spinal cord.

A normal birthing initiates the cranial pump when the squeezed skull “pops” back to a round shape when the head clears the birth canal. Then the pelvis must release as well, this causes an elongation of the spine from the occiput (base of skull) to the sacrum. Once the pelvis releases, this causes the initiation of the Cranial/Sacral Pump which pumps the CSF up and down the spine.

With a Cesarean Section operation, neither the cranial pump nor the cranial/sacral pumps are initiated. This causes non-circulation and stasis of old CSF over various areas of the cortex. Since this is the most critical rapid growth phase of connections in the brain, there is a slowing of neural processes that can lead to slow learning and development, delayed or incomplete creep/crawl phase, walking, reading, writing, etc.

A Forceps delivery prevents the molding of the skull through the birth canal so the cranial pump mechanism is never initiated completely. However, the pelvis still get caught in the birth canal, the stretching still takes place between skull and sacrum and the cranial/sacral pump still gets initiated…so this situation is not quite as bad.

An early blow to the head in infants (closed head injury) can equally “jam” the cranial bones so the pump mechanism is compromised.

In the early years he tested each cranial bone for a stress response and searched for the specific frequency for that cranial bone that neutralized the stress. In this way he could do cranial work with specific sound frequencies to release the “locked” cranial bones. Later he realized that the cerebrospinal fluid itself was responding to the sound pressure waves through the sound table and correcting the cranial problems through acoustic fluid dynamics.

The delayed CSF activation of the neurons and slowing of normal brain development usually leads to a problem completing the cross/crawl patterning at the baby’s creeping phase. This is where the right/left hemispheres of the brain learn to route information to the opposite halves of the body. This leaves kids with dis-coordination between the hemispheres of the brain and between the right/left sides of the body.

Dr. Thompson did eight years of clinical work with these kids using advanced forms of cross crawl re-patterning exercises to reconnect the right/left hemispheres again. Years later, he realized that he could super-speed this process by causing brain synchronization with headphones and binaural beats. That’s the last he ever used the old methods. The years spent with Brain Mapping and Neurofeedback helped him to refine these techniques even more.

At the center for neuroacoustic research, we worked with one kid whose brainwave patterns were “stuck” in Theta and he had an inability to raise his brain function up into Beta to complete tasks of concentration. Dr Thompson started the Binaural Beats at the exactly the Theta brain frequency he was “stuck” at (lets say 5.5 Hz).

What are Binaural Beats? Binaural beats are auditory brainstem responses which originate in the superior olivary nucleus of each hemisphere. They result from the interaction of two different auditory impulses, originating in opposite ears, below 1000 Hz and which differ in frequency between one and 30 Hz (Oster, 1973).For example, if a pure tone of 400 Hz is presented to the right ear and a pure tone of 410 Hz is presented simultaneously to the left ear, an amplitude modulated standing wave of 10 Hz, the difference between the two tones, is experienced as the two wave forms mesh in and out of phase within the superior olivary nuclei. This binaural beat is not heard in the ordinary sense of the word (the human range of hearing is from 20-20,000 Hz). It is perceived as an auditory beat and theoretically can be used to entrain specific neural rhythms through the frequency-following response (FFR)--the tendency for cortical potentials to entrain to or resonate at the frequency of an external stimulus. Thus, it is theoretically possible to utilize a specific binaural-beat frequency as a consciousness management technique to entrain a specific cortical rhythm.

The "Frequency-Following Response" Effect
The binaural-beat appears to be associated with an electroencephalographic (EEG) frequency-following response in the brain (3). Many studies have demonstrated the presence of a frequency-following response to auditory stimuli, recorded at the vertex of the human brain (top of the head). This EEG activity was termed "frequency-following response" because its period corresponds to the fundamental frequency of the stimulus (Smith, Marsh, & Brown, 1975). Binaural-beat stimulation appears to encourage access to altered states of consciousness.

Various Uses of Audio with Embedded Binaural Beats
Uses of audio with embedded binaural beats that are mixed with music or various pink or background sound are diverse. They range from relaxation, meditation, stress reduction, pain management, improved sleep quality, decrease in sleep requirements, super learning, enhanced creativity and intuition, remote viewing, telepathy, and out-of-body experience and lucid dreaming. Audio embedded with binaural beats is often combined with various meditation techniques, as well as positive affirmations and visualization.

Resonant Entrainment of Oscillating Systems
Resonant entrainment of oscillating systems is a well-understood principle within the physical sciences. If a tuning fork designed to produce a frequency of 440 Hz is struck (causing it to oscillate) and then brought into the vicinity of another 440 Hz tuning fork, the second tuning fork will begin to oscillate. The first tuning fork is said to have entrained the second or caused it to resonate. The physics of entrainment apply to bio-systems as well. Of interest here are the electromagnetic brain waves. The electrochemical activity of the brain results in the production of electromagnetic wave forms which can be objectively measured with sensitive equipment. Brain waves change frequencies based on neural activity within the brain. Because neural activity is electrochemical, brain function can be modified through the introduction of specific chemicals (drugs), by altering the brain's electromagnetic environment through induction, or through resonant entrainment techniques.

Binaural beats were discovered in 1839 by a German experimenter, H. W. Dove. The human ability to "hear" binaural beats appears to be the result of evolutionary adaptation. Many evolved species can detect binaural beats because of their brain structure. The frequencies at which binaural beats can be detected change depending upon the size of the species' cranium. In the human, binaural beats can be detected when carrier waves are below approximately 1000 Hz (Oster, 1973). Below 1000 Hz the wave length of the signal is longer than the diameter of the human skull. Thus, signals below 1000 Hz curve around the skull by diffraction. The same effect can be observed with radio wave propagation. Lower-frequency (longer wave length) radio waves (such as AM radio) travel around the earth over and in between mountains and structures. Higher-frequency (shorter wave length) radio waves (such as FM radio, TV, and microwaves) travel in a straight line and can't curve around the earth. Mountains and structures block these high-frequency signals. Because frequencies below 1000 Hz curve around the skull, incoming signals below 1000 Hz are heard by both ears. But due to the distance between the ears, the brain "hears" the inputs from the ears as out of phase with each other. As the sound wave passes around the skull, each ear gets a different portion of the wave. It is this waveform phase difference that allows for accurate location of sounds below 1000 Hz (9). Audio direction finding at higher frequencies is less accurate than it is for frequencies below 1000 Hz. At 8000 Hz the pinna (external ear) becomes effective as an aid to localization. In summary it's the ability of the brain to detect a waveform phase difference is what enables it to perceive binaural beats.

How It Works on the Brain
When signals of two different frequencies are presented, one to each ear, the brain detects phase differences between these signals. "Under natural circumstances a detected phase difference would provide directional information. The brain processes this anomalous information differently when these phase differences are heard with stereo headphones or speakers. A perceptual integration of the two signals takes place, producing the sensation of a third "beat" frequency. The difference between the signals waxes and wanes as the two different input frequencies mesh in and out of phase. As a result of these constantly increasing and decreasing differences, an amplitude-modulated standing wave -the binaural beat- is heard. The binaural beat is perceived as a fluctuating rhythm at the frequency of the difference between the two auditory inputs. Evidence suggests that the binaural beats are generated in the brainstem's superior olivary nucleus, the first site of contra-lateral integration in the auditory system (Oster, 1973). Studies also suggest that the frequency-following response originates from the inferior colliculus (Smith, Marsh, & Brown, 1975)" (Owens & Atwater, 1995). This activity is conducted to the cortex where it can be recorded by scalp electrodes.

Altered States
Binaural beats can easily be heard at the low frequencies (< 30 Hz) that are characteristic of the EEG spectrum (Oster, 1973). This perceptual phenomenon of binaural beating and the objective measurement of the frequency-following response (Hink, Kodera, Yamada, Kaga, & Suzuki, 1980) suggest conditions which facilitate entrainment of brain waves and altered states of consciousness. There have been numerous anecdotal reports and a growing number of research efforts reporting changes in consciousness associated with binaural-beats. "The subjective effect of listening to binaural beats may be relaxing or stimulating, depending on the frequency of the binaural-beat stimulation" (Owens & Atwater, 1995). Binaural beats in the delta (1 to 4 Hz) and theta (4 to 8 Hz) ranges have been associated with reports of relaxed, meditative, and creative states (Hiew, 1995), and used as an aid to falling asleep. Binaural beats in the alpha frequencies (8 to 12 Hz) have increased alpha brain waves (Foster, 1990) and binaural beats in the beta frequencies (typically 16 to 24 Hz) have been associated with reports of increased concentration or alertness (Monroe, 1985) and improved memory (Kennerly, 1994).

Passively listening to binaural beats may not spontaneously propel you into an altered state of consciousness. One's subjective experience in response to binaural-beat stimulation may also be influenced by a number of mediating factors. For example, the willingness and ability of the listener to relax and focus attention may contribute to binaural-beat effectiveness in inducing state changes. "Ultradian rhythms in the nervous system are characterized by periodic changes in arousal and states of consciousness (Rossi, 1986).

Shannahoff-Khalsa, 1991; Webb & Dube, 1981). These naturally occurring shifts may underlie the anecdotal reports of fluctuations in the effectiveness of binaural beats. External factors are also thought to play roles in mediating the effects of binaural beats (Owens & Atwater, 1995). The perception of a binaural beat is, for example, said to be heightened by the addition of white noise to the carrier signal (Oster, 1973), so white noise is often used as background. "Music, relaxation exercises, guided imagery, and verbal suggestion have all been used to enhance the state-changing effects of the binaural beat" (Owens & Atwater, 1995). Other practices such as humming, toning, breathing exercises, autogenic training, and/or biofeedback can also be used to interrupt the homeostasis of resistant subjects (Tart, 1975).

Using Binaural Beats at the speed the brain is already exhibiting equals instant brainwave entrainment. Then he could begin speeding the binaural beats up and watch the brainwaves follow…5.5Hz, 5.6, 5.7 5.8Hz and then the brainwaves would disengage – that was as far as his brain could go, he had no more “elasticity” in his brain function than that. So, Dr Thompson burned a CD for him to use every day with this session on it. The next time he was seen at the center he could start at 5.8 Hz and began having the Binaural beats rose from there: 5.8Hz, 5.9, 6.0, 6.1Hz until he disengaged once again. Dr. Thompson created another CD for him to use every day with this frequency. In just a few sessions The center had his brainwaves in Beta using brainwave entrainment, home sessions and the Learned Neurological Response…no frustrations, no difficulties and less time to get there.

As time went on with different types of patients it became clear that using the sound chair and sounds was helping tremendously. Many patients were not visually dominant, so trying to learn by looking at a computer screen was not the best way to go about things. These kids responded better to an audio feedback tone. Most of these kids even do well with a generic CD for ADD those ramps from Theta up to Beta in a series of discrete steps.

The Hyperactive ADHD kids usually are the high IQ kids. High IQ just means these kids have a higher metabolism for information processing in their brain. They have eaten the salad, main course and dessert and are ready for the next thing while the rest of us are still waiting for our appetizer. When the pathways of information routing between the hemispheres has been disturbed, the nervous system gets stressed and anxious when the information comes in and doesn’t go where it’s supposed to go. The more stress in the nervous system, the more the sympathetic branch of the Autonomic Nervous System becomes dominant and the more “hyper” the system becomes.

These hyperactive kids are hyper because the information processing in a hungry, high IQ mind never got established properly because of an initial birthing trauma or head trauma. The use of specific frequencies of Binaural Beat information delivered through headphones fixes this problem and with continued use burns the pathways in the brain that are missing.

The patterns of brain communication between hemispheres is not always a simple right/left, it usually exists in complex patterns of communications that may be diagonal or may even be within the same hemisphere.

To be absolutely most effective with binaural beats, they should not just be simple right left, but should rotate to align with the “stuck” brainwaves you are trying to entrain. For instance, let’s say you have an ADHD kid who is stuck at 5.5 Hz Theta, in a communication plane between the right fronts and left back parts of the brain (the right frontal cortex and the left occipital). For this you would want to rotate the binaural beats so one tone was matched to the right front and the other tone matched to the back left of the brain….you can do this using Psychoacoustic 3-D sound processing. So, Dr. Thompson was rotating the binaural beats in 3-D space to match the brainwave pattern and plane of orientation of those brainwaves in the brain to create his soundtracks.

In addition, the brain is a master of multi-tasking, so Dr. Thompson layered multiple binaural beat patterns for each brainwave frequency that had a problem, each layer oriented in a different 3-D position to match the brainwave patterns of the patient’s brain on EEG. The center worked on all the brain problems simultaneously and “fixed” them with the headphones, sound chair and eventually with the light glasses/modulator.  This is because at a certain point they realized that this Bio-Feed-IN technique with visual/auditory/kinesthetic stimulation was faster, cheaper and more effective than the neurofeedback being used.

This system also works well with Dyslexia, which could be looked upon as a more severe form of ADD, with similar causes and a similar treatment.

Autistic kids seem to have a similar background of early head trauma, non-initiation of the CSF cranial pump with “C” section delivery or forceps delivers. This would lead to the same dis-coordination of the right/left hemispheres we see in ADD and ADHD kids. Binaural Beats through headphones clears this problem quite effectively in Dr. Thompson’s clinical experience. In Autistic kids there is clear EEG evidence of other deficiencies in brainwave function. In particular these kids do not show MU brainwave activity. MU brainwaves are between 9-11 Hz and are called the “mirror” neurons.

MU Alpha: 8-13 Hz
This brainwave frequency tends to spike at 8-13 Hz and is often referred to as the “Wicket Rhythm” because of its appearance on EEG. Firing of neurons in the brain’s motor cortex (which send signals to the body to contract a muscle) inhibit MU waves in the brain. If a person watches someone else contract a muscle, MU waves are also suppressed…this is due to what is called “mirror” neuron activity. Dr Thompson believes that this is a cognitive neurological coupled oscillator function. Coupled Oscillators is the scientific underpinnings of sympathetic resonance.

Kids with Autism show no suppression of MU-wave activity when watching someone else contract a muscle. This means there is a deficiency in their mirror neuron activity. With no MU activity they would have an impaired ability to connect socially with others because the mechanism to mirror and learn these behaviors is missing. Brainwave entrainment of MU activity in Autistic kids may be a valuable approach to normalize their brain function by re-establishing the missing coupled oscillator function.

GAMMA: 40 Hz
In addition Dr. Thompson believes that these kids have a deficiency of Gamma brainwave activity as well. Aside from the four basic brainwave categories of Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta, there is a fifth category of brainwave activity called Gamma that was added in 1980. Gamma Brainwaves have a range of around 40 Hz and represent a continuous “hum” of activity in the background all the time. Gamma brainwaves are linked to cognitive consciousness, since the only time they disappear is under general anesthesia.

Gamma has been called the “binding” frequency as it seems to bind together sensory information from the various regions of the cortex and bind all of them together. Without this binding together of the information from seeing, hearing, touch, smell, taste, etc., into a coherent whole, the world would seem completely chaotic to us. It seems to me that an imbalance in Gamma activity in the brain could lead to the symptoms associated with Autism or even Schizophrenia. Autistic kids seem to exhibit the kind of symptoms you would expect to see if a person was having trouble integrating sensory information. This would lead to a sensory experience of the world being jumbled and not making sense, difficulty reacting normally to social activities and hyper-responsiveness to sensory overload. DR Thompson and the center have had preliminary promising results with Gamma brainwave entrainment with autistic children over the past 6 years. In addition Autistic children exhibit similar problems with how the right / left hemispheres communicate with one another, the same finding seen as a major component of ADD and ADHD kids. The use of sound in ADD and ADHD treatment protocols that have shown great success over the past 20 years, and success thus far with children with Autism.

Gamma brain activity is required for the “binding” of information from all our senses so the world around us “hangs together” and makes sense. Without this, the world seems fractured and incoherent.  Therefore, Dr Thompson uses a combination of Gamma and MU brainwave entrainment protocols with good clinical results. Once these two brain patterns begin to get exercised and functional again the world begins to come together and make sense and the mirroring ability of the emerging MU patterns allow a coupled oscillator connection socially with other people.

Ultimately one could say all disorders/pathologies have their origin in non-adaptation to stress, especially experienced and seen in the autonomic nervous system (ANS), that part of the person which regulates and governs the internal functioning of bodily processes and , therefore, one’s health and ultimately the way they respond or fail to respond to life.  A severe and/or chronic level of stress in the ANS then causes stress in all bodily organ/glandular systems under its control.  The health and very life of an individual is affected.  When this happens, the sympathetic branch of the ANS is shifted into full gear, running continuously in a “Fight-Flight” reaction. The parasympathetic branch, in turn, shuts down or is greatly minimized in its ability to normalize.  Homeostasis becomes rare.  Bodily imbalance becomes the norm.

Bio-Tuning is a Holistic Healing Modality created by Dr. Jeffrey Thompson through his knowledge and understanding of sound, music, physics and quantum physics and as developed through many years of clinical research with thousands of patients and volunteers.  It is a safe, non-invasive, pleasant and extremely effective healing modality for healing the consciousness of an individual, the chief place of disharmony.    It is the process of using your own voice to facilitate self-healing of your body, emotions, belief systems and spiritual blocks.

The Dr. Thompson Vibro-Acoustic-Visual Approach
Working with thousands of patients and volunteers throughout 26 years of clinical sound therapy research, Dr. Thompson has shown that specific frequencies can bring a person to his/her most relaxed and stress-reduced state: the state of ANS balance/the state of health and well-being, not only of the body, but of the whole person.  When the ANS is in balance one feels different, one responds and acts with more control and awareness, one is more alive, as it were.

Dr. Thompson’s work includes the use of technologically formatted sound, vibration, and light synchronized into a pleasant, non-invasive, patient-compliant modality.  It resonates the very cells of the body, awakening an increased state of energy and health, affecting one on all levels of existence.  The following further explains aspects of this scientific approach to health and wellness.

Vibration, the kinesthetic experience of movement, is processed in the brainstem and is separate from hearing.  Because of this, even persons with impaired or low-hearing can and do benefit from Dr. Thompson’s technology.  When the body has a kinesthetic experience coupled with an auditory experience of hearing relaxing, stress-reducing sounds, the healing effect is greatly enhanced.   Dr. Thompson goes one step further and includes color-sound pulse-driven lights.  His approach thereby employs the three primary perceptual modes of learning -- that of hearing, feeling, and seeing.  Deep relaxation and rejuvenation can be experienced within a brief period of time.  A greater sense of well-being is experienced physically, emotionally, and mentally, recharging one for the next life endeavor.

Coupled Oscillators
Every material substance has a resting resonant frequency.  This principle governs sympathetic resonance and involves the laws of physics: the principle that causes a wine glass to vibrate when exposed to its own tone.  The laws governing this principle of sympathetic resonance are outlined in the definitive Scientific American article “Coupled Oscillators and Biological Synchronization.”
Briefly, Coupled Oscillators refers to the universal property of all matter which causes them to resonate together to save energy.  This is part of a large natural ecological system designed to get the most work accomplished with the least amount of energy expended.   Biological systems exhibit a fine degree of expression of this law: they are alive and responsive to their environment.  The brain and nervous system of man exhibits the finest degree of expression of this principle.  This principle of quantum physics in phenomenon is called “Brainwave Entrainment.”

Brainwave Entrainment
Biological synchronicities with the environment are subtle, but definite.  Some are light pulses, some electromagnetic and some are sound.  This is brainwave entrainment.  Sound frequencies pulsing at a brainwave speed cause brainwaves to time themselves to these sounds and alter brainwave function and states of consciousness.  Dr. Jeffrey D. Thompson, well known and respected in the field of sound for his scientific and efficacious approach, uses his own unique proprietary process of brainwave entrainment which he calls “Phase Modulation.”

Phase Modulation
Dr. Thompson’s Phase-Modulation technology helps the listener’s brainwaves to comfortably follow the beat of the pulses in the soundtrack and enter into a frequency following response. Because Dr. Thompson’s technology enhanced one’s natural ability to enter a precise brainwave state, the desired brainwave state is quickly achieved, even when one is “stuck” in a particular range as happens with many labeled as ADD, ADHD or a learning problem like Dyslexia.   With repetition the person’s brainwave states can be “freed,” as it were, to modulate with that state required for a task-at-hand being the dominant brainwave state at the time.

To benefit from this aspect of Dr. Thompson’s technology, headphones which completely cover one’s ears are recommended.  This blocks out ambient noise and also separates what an individual hears in each ear.  Hearing a different frequency in each ear is the basis of Dr. Thompson’s brain hemisphere synchronization technology, a highly desirable state of integration in the brain.  When brain hemispheres are synchronized, they “talk” to each other and a person is able to think, feel and act in a more balanced, productive manner.   Empowering his work even more, Dr. Thompson couples it with “Acoustic Pacing™.”

Acoustic Pacing™
Used in his clinical practice for 20+ years and in his research with sound and its healing effects, Dr. Thompson uses Acoustic Pacing™ with his Psychoacoustic 3-D recordings of nature sounds, body sounds and NASA space sounds, which he calls “Primordial Sounds.”  The tempo of these are subtly increased or decreased over a specific time frame.  The 3-D recordings are so realistic; the brain assumes they are real at that moment.  Because the body takes its biological clock cues and internal rhythm patterns from nature, when the 3-D recordings begin to slow over time, the bodily system does likewise.  Heart rate, respiration, and brainwaves follow easily and naturally.  This is brainwave entrainment in its finest use.

With Acoustic Pacing™, the entire biological system passes into an altered state of deep relaxation where stress is minimized or eliminated and where healing can occur.  Clinical studies using EEG, HRV and multi-channel biofeedback monitoring prove conclusively that stress reduction and a balancing of the ANS occur.   Results are easily seen with Real-Time Heart Rate Variability monitoring, an integral aspect of Dr. Thompson’s Bio-Tuning® modality.  The ANS becomes balances, with the branches crossing one another in a beautiful rhythmic dance dotted with the homeostatic state of perfect balance, all easily seen in Dr. Thompson’s clinical research.

Primordial Sounds
Another aspect of genuine interest, regardless of the manifestation of dis-ease, is that this Acoustic Pacing™ system gives “Primordial Sounds” power, as it were, to awaken deep levels of recognition in the subconscious mind.  These could be termed “Archetypal Sounds,” similar to Carl Jung’s idea of “Archetypal Images”. These are sounds primordially recognizable to the subconscious mind regardless of race, sex, religion, culture, or up-bringing.  They help release physical, emotional, and mental energy blocks, guiding one to better health and enhancing stress management.
Implications of Using Dr. Thompson’s Vibro-Acoustic-Visual Modality with Individuals with ADD, ADHD and Autism
The possibility of placing the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in a balanced and stress-reduced state of equilibrium with a non-invasive, pleasant approach, with good patient or participant compliance is too good to ignore in this day and age when technology can and should offer its best to all, especially to those in need, as are individuals labeled and in a sense, pushed aside or demeaned as being ADD, ADHD, Autism, having Dyslexia, etc.

Placing the ANS in a balanced, stress-reduced state on a regular basis causes a “Learned Neurological Response” in the ANS.  This is similar to the type of response which happens when groups of muscles are worked at a gym.  With a regular physical exercise program, the body adapts its ability to do the work it is trained to do.  Muscles and endurance are improved and enhanced, and a new level of physical fitness can be achieved.  So, too, can a new level of emotional and mental control and fitness be achieved with the repetition of scientifically tested musical soundscapes.  Dr. Thompson’s holistic healing modality, Bio-Tuning® is the prime mode of this neuro-muscular re-education.
Yes, one’s nervous system can be re-educated, brain hemispheres can be “balanced” and learn to communicate with one another.   The more often and regularly the ANS is brought into a state of stress-reduction and balance, the more the nervous system, hence the person, learns to go to this enhanced functional state.  Through repetition, the ability to function in this state as a normal mode of operating is achieved.

When the brain is able to function in all brainwave states with an ease taken for granted by many, an individual has a grand opportunity to live, work and love to their fullest capacity.  Children are able to learn, to socialize properly, and to modify their behavior to acceptable social standards.  In other words, they have a proper chance to succeed in life without the hurt, the name calling, the depression, anxiety, the frustration, the over-compensation which is frequently a part of an individual’s life when the brain and/or cerebrospinal fluid is not functioning properly, and he/she is forced to live a life basically in the “Fight/Flight” mode.

When close to a child or adult who struggles with ADD, ADHD, or Autism, one suffers with them, as every family knows so well.  Family relationships and finances are strained, depleted and frequently broken, causing undue hardship to them and society in general.  As long as one is hurting, our Global Body is sick and needs help.   Dr. Jeffrey Thompson’s Bio-Tuning® modality can help.  He needs help, however, to have the program automated so clinicians can be trained.  It is our conviction and that of so many who have benefited from Bio-Tuning® that this holistic healing gem of genius must be disseminated and made available to those in need.   We must offer the opportunity to individuals in need the opportunity for safely and effectively

Healing their Body * Heart * Mind and Spirit with Sound.
